Milton DePina spent more than a decade on the warehouse floor at Stop & Shop — training new hires, learning every corner of the operation, and earning his business degrees at UMass Dartmouth on his own time, all the way through an MBA. A Teamster for over sixteen years, he knows exactly what the members he serves do all day, because he did it.
Before carrying a Field Representative's book, Milton was a Local 25 organizer — the "every Teamster is an organizer" motto isn't a slogan to him, it's a job description. President Mari appointed him Field Representative in 2023, and the organizer never left.
It showed in the summer of 2025, when more than 400 Local 25 members struck Republic Services. Five weeks in, Milton was on the Peabody picket line delivering refreshments and ice when workers from Republic's nonunion Haverhill plant came to the union — the company was threatening to fire anyone who refused to cross. Milton turned the threat inside out: a majority of the Haverhill plant signed union cards mid-strike, converting Republic's strikebreaking into a brand-new organizing drive. The strike ended victorious, with a strong new contract overwhelmingly approved.
The rest of the book gets the same energy: members at Milton CAT united to eliminate the two-tier wage and PTO system, preserve pensions, and cut healthcare costs; contracts moving at units like Lindenmeyr Munroe; a reinstated member back on the job; and new stewards seated at Arrow Paper and Republic Services — because strong leadership on the job site is what makes the union strong.
